Spicebush Genus Details
The spicebush is a native shrub in the eastern U.S. It is generally found growing in woods but is now also widely grown as an ornamental. The twigs and leaves are aromatic when crushed. Small yellow flowers bloom in mid April before the leaves appear. In autumn, the leaves turn golden yellow and red berries appear. The twigs, leaves and fruit have been used to make an aromatic tea and the berries, when dried, have been used as a substitute for all-spice.
